Welcome to Cerro Gordo

Water Tower To live in Cerro Gordo is to return to the roots of middle America. The slower pace of life allows time to relax on your porch swing, listen to the crickets, and watch children grow strong, secure and safe. This is truly the best of both worlds, small town living with modern conveniences.

The Village of Cerro Gordo is a small agricultural community with a population of 1,436. It is located approximately 12 miles east of Decatur on State Route #105 and 35 miles southwest of Champaign-Urbana.

The name Cerro Gordo is of Mexican origin meaning "Fat Hill". The name was given to the town in 1855 in honor of the early citizens who fought and were wounded in the heroic battle at the mountain pass of Cerro Gordo, Mexico, in the Mexico War 1845-1848.

Scoreboard The C.G. volunteer fire department and community ambulance service provide the village and surrounding areas with fire protection and emergency service. Twenty-four hour police protection is provided by the village, as well as city water, city sewer, gargbage service and cable television. Illinois Power provides natural gas and electricity.
